There’s a surge in bicycle sales and riding participation in many urban settings around the world. Sales have more than doubled for bicycle retailers and many places have invested in the development of infrastructure to support an increasing biking public.
Some have adopted this type of personal transportation out of necessity. Reduced public transport services and lower earnings have forced commuters to opt for the cheapest mode of practical transportation.
But in the US, the rise in bicycle usage is more of a cultural shift. The pandemic has forced people to reassess their priorities in life. It has gone beyond the health and environmental benefits. Many people have learned to appreciate things that bring simple joys and a slower pace in life.
Time will tell if this trend continues but one can hope that more people will realize why bicycling is great.
