The Case Against Wireless Audio Accessories

I accept the inevitable: wireless communication will become the standard on all electronic devices. This includes earphones and headphones. But I won’t like it.

I’ll admit, having no wires to snag is a huge convenience. And the sound quality over wireless is not an issue anymore. Further, economies of scale have made this technology affordable for everyone.

My issue is service life. Added complexity means a higher likelihood of breakdown along the way. And anything that runs on batteries puts a limit on service life. Over time, a battery will lose its ability to recharge, and many of these devices were not designed to be repairable or have replaceable batteries.

My drawer of electronic junk now has 5 different wireless headphone pairs. My go-to headphone is still my trusty 20-year-old Sennheiser with a 3.5 mm jack.
